Gorilla Meme believes in a Universal Freedom of Speech and Expression. The limits of a meme are only limited to one’s imagination.
Freedom of Speech in the context of a rights of people means that people are free from Government preventing them from speaking or expressing themselves. This does not mean a freedom of consequences. In fact speech that cause personal damage can lead to legal consequences. And expressing yourself can cause you to be fired from work.
Freedom of speech is only that you are not being prevented from speaking, not the ability to say anything with no negative consequences.
Warning of Consequences
“Malcolm: A karate master does not kill people with his bare hands. He does not lose his temper and kill his wife. The person who kills is the person who has no discipline, no restraint, and who has purchased his power in the form of a Saturday night special. And that is why you think that to build a place like this is simple.
― Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park
Hammond: It was simple.
Malcolm: Then why did it go wrong?”
Memes can be used as a tools to express negative emotion towards others such as: anger, hate, and jealousy. These are all forms of expression and a person has a right to express them. While someone is free to express negative emotions towards others, they are not free from the consequences of that expression.
Hate and other negative emotions towards others should be confronted and addressed. Otherwise they risk normalizing those thoughts which lead to action of violence.
